welcome to TREES AT THE METEOR 09
.......Not that there is anything wrong with driving around Harrowfield looking for Santa's and reindeers in peoples houses' windows on balmy December nights - we just think there might be something more. Thankfully, for those who'd like a fresh experience, NOW is the time to celebrate - Trees at the Meteor has arrived ! Putting the Christmas ham back into Hamilton! True story.
With the experience, networks and knowledge gained from 6 years producing the Easter art festival ‘Stations of the Cross', attracting 3500 to the Hamilton Gardens in 09, Trees at the Meteor will again be a sight and sound feast that brings some reflective, slowing, meditative space out of the retail indulgences and the pace and temperature of the frenzy of Christmas. We want to wonder what this Christ birth was all about.
Artists around the Waikato and further a field, have been working in studios, dining rooms, lawns and garages coming up with trees that will be exhibited in the Meteor theatre space. There will be a variety of Trees - all celebrating through design and decoration what Christmas symbolises to each artist - here in the South Pacific. There are trees from 6 genres exhibited - kiwiana, recycled, avant garde, pou, stencil art and new for 09 - the gadgetree.
Winners will be announced at the artist gala opening on TUESDAY 15th but you as a viewer can also help decide the PEOPLES CHOICE award by voting for it. Come and support local talent. Our creatives have also put together some family friendly interactive stands in amongst the trees too, but especially for the kids! - They'll ponder on just how privileged they are in NZ - and might just have fun while they're doing it.
But that's not all - from the Meteor, Polynesian drums, small brass band, Mr Whippy, a brand new
sculpture and the odd busker- (who really knows?? ) will accompany summer night strollers as you follow 24 star light boxes up Victoria street, up the cathedral lawn and into the Cathedral itself. Woven choir will sing, the organ will be pumped, projections will project - in the cathedral - NOT TO BE MISSED. Outdoors, under the stars enjoy a complimentary ROCKET coffee or TRADE AID hot chocolate from volunteer baristas from cafes all over town - and your night will be done, dusted and remembered - for all the right reasons.
And on Thursday -the 17th December - a TREAT. Late 80's Mercedes will perform on the St Peters lawn. Brilliant. 3 shows. Carols by Hamilton's hippest.
Being Trees at the Meteor, the event, not surprisingly, is a fundraiser for Hamilton NGO environmental group A Rocha.
Bring your whanau, neighbours and enemies. It's an all in. Something for everyone. It's all green. Looking forward to seeing you there - starting a new tradition and new destinations. Crowd mingling, pine tingling south-end Victoria st. A theatre and a cathedral on a hill.
